Direct your visitors to affiliated merchants when appropriate. Sell products from your website whose manufacture and distribution is fulfilled by another company. Sell your own products - digital or otherwise - from your own website. Sell advertising space - only for very highly trafficked sites. Or, if you don't have a website, use a distributor who already has traffic of millions to market your product. Directing Your Visitors to Affiliated Merchants If you find a great product offered on the internet as you build your website, see if the merchant that carries that product has an affiliate program. This option requires the least amount of work from you, but also offers the least reward.  If your visitor is truly interested in what the affiliated merchant has to offer, the visitor will bookmark that merchant's site and begin visiting it directly, thereby cutting you out of commissions in the long run.  This option is, however, the path that most web sites choose. Most affiliate programs are run through Affiliate Networks.  The four biggest networks are Commission Junction, LinkShare, and BeFree (otherwise known as Reporting.net), and  Performics.  Commission Junction and Linkshare have far-and-away the best user interfaces.  Both BeFree and Performics are greatly lacking in the ease-of-use category, Performics more so. I recommend signing up with these networks NOW - for three reasons: Some programs disappear. You will need your username and password now to create special bookmarks.  These special bookmarks will allow you to access these programs automatically so that you do not have to enter your information each time. No better time than the present? Commission Junction, Linkshare, and BeFree allow multiple sub-affiliates under your main account so that you can track results from each of your websites individually.  However, I do not recommend using this feature with BeFree because you must gain approval for each new sub-affiliate that you add to this account by manually sending an email to each merchant.  Instead, create a new account for each site so that you can apply to affiliate programs automatically.  In many cases you will be approved for these programs automatically also. As of July 2001, the four networks mentioned above are the only ones that offer tracking your customers with a Member ID.  This allows sites such as Lowest Price Watch to determine which customers purchased which items. Sell Others' Products From Your Website I am just starting to look into this.  I recently found a site called Merchant Partner Plus that offers this.  I do not have any feedback on their quality yet though.
