Tutorial Contents The first thing you must determine before you begin your quest for internet fame and money is your topic. What do you want to share with everyone else on the web? What are you good at? Your website will need content, whether it is your thoughts on hair style or a program that automatically finds the best deals on houseplants. Your topic ideally should also lend itself to making money. Determining Keyword Popularity Once you have determined your topic you must determine your domain name. This is a good time to tell you that there are three main ingredients for cooking up a successful website: TRAFFIC, TRAFFIC, and TRAFFIC! I'm serious about this! Since most of your beginning traffic will come from search engines, we've got to determine a domain name that will bring your site the most visitors who will be interested in what you've got. Ideally the domain name should include only highly searched terms, hyphenated if need be. The name of your site, which can be different than your domain name, should also include highly searched terms. This way when any other site links to yours it will use those highly searched terms and improve your ranking in search engine results. There are three main resources for determining highly searched words: the WordTracker email report, the Goto suggestion tool, and Google AdWords. WordTracker will email you a list of the top 500 searched words and phrases. Goto shows the number of times a particular word or phrase and its plural is searched. It will also, very helpfully, list suggestions. You should use Google to confirm or deny the numbers presented by Goto and to determine the number of times the plurals and singulars were searched individually (as opposed to Goto's combined figure). Since learning by example is the easiest way to learn, throughout this tutorial we will use an example in which you, build a website that specializes in examining and reviewing the newest high-tech gadgets. To determine your website title and domain name you should first check Goto for gadgets, review, and high-tech. They each appear to be under 25,000 searches a month. The combination of the two highest ranking words, review and gadgets, have a search frequency of (pathetically) less than 100. Since these words and their combination did not appear to have a very high search ranking, you should now check the combination of some more common synonyms like "electronics report", which you will find is still low (under 200). What now? Formulating a Better Domain Name and Title Subscribe to an email from WordTracker (when I signed up I received only one email - so they don't spam). Look for a high ranking combination that would be similar to what you are offering. For this example, we find that one of the highest ranking, relevant combos is "consumer reports". Double check your combos at Goto and Google. Consumerreports.com however isn't available, so get the next best combo, reportsconsumer.com. The fact that the words are reversed is not important. Especially for smaller sites, visitors will not be typing your domain name into their address bar; and they definitely won't be typing it in if they don't know about it. As your site gains popularity, visitors will become more familiar with your domain name and be able to remember it. In general people do not type in domain names, they click through from a search engine or other sites. You're trying to get traffic here, and search engines place importance on words in your domain name. As far as giving your website a title goes, don't call it Consumer Reports because that would be infringement. Title it instead something like Turbo Consumer Reports, so that it sounds exciting. All links to your site, including links in the three big directories, Yahoo, dmoz.org, and About.com, will include the key words " Consumer Reports". Domain Name Registration Check your combo right here at Appz Gamez Warez and register it. You'll find that we have the lowest prices for domain name registration. When registering your domain name, keep in mind that the registrar should offer a domain name manager with a good user interface. Network Solutions, for example, has terrible domain name management in which you must wade through confusing correspondences of email that contain complex instructions just to change your DNS server. What ever you do, do not pay $35/yr to register your domain name ever again. Hosting Your Site For Free If you are new to web design you may want to host your site for free. If this is the case "Go directly to Hypermart.net. Do not pass Go!" Hypermart is far superior to any other free web host. I will warn you right now - and mark my works - if you look for a better free web host, you will only end up wasting a lot of your time. Recently, in addition to the banner ad that Hypermart places on your site to pay for your free hosting, they have added pop-down banners. Although we do not advocate circumventing their attempt to pay for the services they are providing you for free, we will give you the Javascript code to keep the banners from opening new windows: <SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript"> <!-- function open {return true;} //--> </SCRIPT> Just add the preceding code to the <HEAD> section of your HTML to keep any new browser windows from being spawned. Paying for Web Hosting When your site begins receiving traffic and you get sick of the advertising banners that free hosts force you to use, HostSave When looking for another website, be sure to choose one that allows you to run your own Perl scripts and Server Side Includes (SSI). Now... on to HTML |
